Bill 'Swampy' Marsh - 2 x Great Australian Stories - Shearing Stories and Droving Stories
Bill ‘Swampy’ Marsh 2 x Great Australian Stories
Shearing Stories - The Shearer, so much a part of the Australian economy when the country lived on the sheep’s back, is now beginning to vanish into mythology. Bill ‘Swampy’ Marsh began collecting shearing stories several years ago, and when he was interviewed on the Sunday morning ABC radio program Summer All Over, he was inundated with callers from all over Australia, all keen to pass on their own. The result, a collection that brings to life a world of outback stations, larrikins, roustabouts, sagacious dogs and occasionally strange cooks, is a worthy addition not only to the bush yarn but to Australian social history.
Droving Stories - Before Utes, trucks, road trains, planes and helicopters, drovers moved stock over vast distances of Australia’s outback to market or in search of feed. It was an isolated and often difficult life, but one filled with adventure and great humour. Drovers, ringers, duffers and scoundrels: they were a wry and toughened bunch of white, black, half-caste and mixed-race folk, who knew all the tricks of the trade. Their kind is vanishing into Australia’s past and their voices-and their stories-will soon be lost forever.
